To quote Miles Finch from the movie Elf, “I’ve got one idea that I’m especially psyched out of my mind about. Ya’ know, it’s one of those ideas where you’re just like, YES!” This sums up how I feel about today’s project! My Lowe’s Creative Ideas Blogger challenge this month was to create holiday decor using some items from Lowe’s. I came up with the idea to create DIY Oversized Ornaments using light globes, tuna cans, and eye hooks. Oh my!

I have one of the most satisfying decoupage crafts I’ve ever done for you – and probably the easiest. My friends, if you can wrap twine, then you can do this project. Beginning Mod Podgers take note, because this is the perfect way to get started with the magic glue. You can re-dress an old container (glass works, but you can probably use any container) by simply wrapping. Here’s another jar I decorated and then the fun little tutorial. You are going to love this easy craft!

Colorful Canvas Art (DIY)

A couple of months ago, I put together a dining room inspiration board that included a lovely piece of art by Emily Green. She actually has smaller versions for a pretty reasonable price, but since I was wanting something pretty huge, it seemed much less expensive to shamefully attempt to copy it, or at least get the same fun and colorful feel. Megan had plans this weekend to work on another piece of canvas art that you guys will see soon, so I decided to go ahead and work on my own art at the same time.

I went into Michael’s intending to purchase a large (24″x36″) canvas but they ended up only having 30″x40″ so I figured go big or go home right? Luckily, the canvas was on super sale for $15 instead of the $40 it was originally priced at. We also purchased some craft paint, but seeing as how Megan has almost every Martha craft paint color under the sun, we were pretty much good to go.

Lately I have had wreaths on the brain. But I always think the ones I see at stores are a little bit unattractive. I still super love the boxwood wreath that I bought at Target at Christmastime. The sad news about a real boxwood wreath is that you have to keep it inside because if it gets too hot or cold, it will turn brown and that’s ugly. I was trying to think about how I could make one that wasn’t so sensitive. I debated using felt for leaves but that seemed too complicated so I thought I would see what I could do with paper. I determined this would work for me because my front door is behind a storm door so it doesn’t need to be waterproof.

How to Make a Wallet Shrine

Our Church of Craft project this month was Shrine Wallets. These are based on Mexican Shrine Wallets, which are small, tri-fold pocket shrines. Unfolded, they reveal pictures of saints, a miniature rosary, and a printed prayer folded up into a pocket. There’s a photo of one here. My version is a more generalized pocket shrine, which can commemorate anything you like. I love the idea of carrying one around in your bag as a reminder of your favorite people, places, or things.

I have tried both nylon and metal zipper, each gave different feel and effect on the macaron coin purse. Nylon zipper is easy to sew since you can just cut the zipper to the correct length. Zipping and unzipping is easier on nylon zipper too. Aesthetic wise, I like metal zipper though it requires more works to do. If you find zipping on metal zipper is craggy due to small circular shape, rub the zipper’s teeth with some wax or candle, then zip and unzip a few times, you will find zipping is smoother after the waxing.

If you love wrapping packages as much as I do, you might enjoy making this mega-fringed flower. It’s reminiscent of a Gerbera daisy and is an attention-catching substitute for the usual bow. Based on the same technique as a much smaller quilled fringed flower, the cuts are made with detail scissors. Instead of regular paper or lightweight cardstock, I used a new product called TerraSkin (essentially, pressed mineral powder), but paper or cardstock would be fine too.

I recently found some heavy weight crepe paper at a local discount store and so I couldn't resist making some large crepe paper flowers for a community gathering. Grouped together in a simple metal pitcher, they looked great, and while not exactly quick to whip up, they are certainly festive and can be enjoyed for quite some time!
